When Motherhood Changes:Parenting Adult Children with Faith

02/23/26 | Midlife Motherhood

Adventures With Four Is Growing Up — And So Am I

Parenting adult children is a completely different experience than raising toddlers or teenagers.  The hands-on years slowly transition into a season of guidance, prayer and a trust.  For many Christian moms, this shift can feel both freeing and heartbreaking.  Learning how to let go as a mother -while still staying connected- requires faith, boundaries, and grace. If you’re navigating the empty nest season or adjusting to grown children living at home, you are not alone.Motherhood doesn’t end when children becomes adults- it simply evolves.

When I first started Adventures With Four, my days were full of little hands, bedtime stories, snack crumbs, and the beautiful chaos of raising young children.

The blog reflected that season.

Sensory bins. Holiday crafts. Book lists. Faith in the middle of tantrums. Finding grace in the “sassy, messy, and crazy” moments of motherhood.

And I wouldn’t trade those years for anything.

But something has shifted.

Not suddenly. Not dramatically. Just slowly… quietly… faithfully.

My children are no longer little.

They are young adults.

And motherhood looks different now.

When Parenting Adult Children Feels Different

There’s a moment no one really prepares you for — when your children stop needing you in the daily, hands-on way they once did.

They don’t need help tying shoes.

They don’t need you to pack lunches.

They don’t need bedtime lullabies.

They need something different.

Wisdom.

Space.

Support.

Prayer.

Trust.

And sometimes… they need distance.

This season has surprised me. It has stretched me. It has deepened my faith in ways the toddler years never could.

Because now I’m learning what it means to love with open hands.

Learning to Let Go as a Mother

I used to think motherhood was about raising.

Now I understand it’s also about releasing.

Releasing control.

Releasing expectations.

Releasing the version of life I imagined.

And trusting that the seeds planted in those early years are growing — even when I can’t see the fruit yet.

This stage carries both grief and gift.

There is grief in being less needed.

But there is incredible beauty in watching your children become who they were created to be.

Motherhood in Every Season

It means we’re growing up.

Not leaving behind the heart of this space — but maturing it.

Adventures With Four will always be about:

Faith.

Family.

Intentional living.

Grace in the everyday.

But now, we’ll also talk about:

  • Parenting adult children
  • Letting go without losing connection
  • Trusting God with choices that aren’t ours
  • Boundaries without guilt
  • Rediscovering who we are in this new chapter
  • Strengthening marriage and identity after the busy years
  • The quiet ache and quiet beauty of change

This isn’t a rebrand.

It’s a reflection of real life.

A Word to the Mama Still in the Little Years

If you’re still in the thick of toddler messes and school drop-offs, this space is still for you.

But I’ll also gently tell you this:

It goes fast.

The days feel long.

The years truly are short.

And one day, you will blink and find yourself here — wondering how the little ones grew up so quickly.

Walking Forward in Grace

I’ve always described myself as a work in progress.

That hasn’t changed.

If anything, this season has made me more aware of how much I still rely on God’s grace daily.

Motherhood at every stage requires faith.

But releasing grown children?

That requires surrender.

So here we go.

Adventures With Four is entering a new chapter.

Still warm.

Still honest.

Still rooted in faith.

Just deeper.

Thank you for growing with me.
