(Photo by Will Steward)Never in a million years did I think I would actually have an “update” to a post I had written back in July of 2012 I cheekily titledPaper or Plastic **the back story**I’m sorry, this might offend but there is just something about picking up a dogged eared book and getting so totally lost in its pages that when the story is done you are itching for more.
My love for books has been something that my parents nurtured and cultivated my entire life. I remember staring up at bookshelves overflowing with paperbacks, hardcovers and stacks upon stacks of magazines.
Boring books with no pictures.
Books filled with strange pictures.
Small books, large books.
Books that smelled musty and brand new books that creaked when you opened them.
*happy sigh*
Maybe that explains the ferocious appetite I have for the written word and the enjoyment I find when I am reading a really great book in my hands.
One that captures my emotions and takes me on a journey to places I have never even entertained the thought of seeing.
I like being able to hold a book up and see just how far I have come in the story so I know when to slow down so the story will last a wee bit longer.
I’m not “there yet” when it comes to Ebooks but big daddy loves his kobo which brings me to my question.
Which do you prefer Paper or plastic?
Old fashioned hold in your hands and manually turn the pages paper book or hold a mini screen push a button “book”?
Random question I know but bear with me for a moment while I explain. While I was grocery shopping Sunday the “terrible horrible” happened.
I’m not exactly sure how it happened {thankfully the kids were not at fault!}
but his Kobo has transformed from a “mini screen push a button book” into a pixelated mess.
The screen mirrors one giant frozen crack and just like that all of his books are gone!
Ack!
I can’t even imagine how it would feel if I woke up and all my beloved books were gone.
Where would I even start?
What book would be my first have-to-replace book?
I’m not even ready to entertain the thought!
Realistically he can purchase another e reader and I am assuming the books he purchased will be back. Right?
I don’t know if I will ever be the e reader type.
What about you? Paper or plastic?
**the update**
Guess what was wrapped in brightly colored paper tucked under my Christmas Tree?
One of my wonderful day-home parents gave me a present on their last day before vacation and because I think its weird to open Christmas presents before it’s time so, I tucked it under my tree and promptly forgot all about it.
So, when my three year old brought the gift to me I was convinced I already knew what it was.
“A box of chocolates and perhaps a gift card to itunes or the nail salon down the street.”
Nope, I was wrong.
If you guessed a kobo ereader you would be 100% accurate.
To say I was stunned would be an understatement. In the past 6 months I have read 13 14 books.
Which is another post all together as I am still fairly disappointed in how that series ended. {grr}
So, now I have a kobo and I feel like a fish out of water. I like that it’s light weight and has a light (snicker) but I have no idea how to use it. Well, I sort of do.
After finishing the last book in the The sookie stackhouse series I used my kobo and picked up the “what came next” book so I could appease some of the frustration. Which I devoured in just under 20 minutes.
It would appear that I now have the entire book store at my fingertips.
I have no idea what I even want to read. **sigh**
This might take me awhile to get used too…. don’t get me wrong I am shocked at such a wonderful gift and I don’t want to seem ungrateful in the slightest. I’m just going to miss dog-eared pages.
Reblogged this on .
I totally understand where you are coming from. I prefer paperback myself. My daughter had a Nook and I just could not get use to it. I do not like reading online books. Prefer the actual book in my hand. But like anything I guess you get use to it once you start using it on a consistent basis.
