“Honey? Do you know where…” “I can’t seem to find…. Have you seen?” I knew when we moved into our new house there was going to be a few things that we wouldn’t be able to locate until the boxes were unpacked and their contents were tucked away. But this is getting ridiculous. The maze of half open boxes, nothing in it’s place has me wanting to light a match and walk away from the entire mess. It’s been two months since we moved in and the mountain of boxes in the garage hasn’t shrunken and the list of missing items has grown.
An organized home can make your life simpler. Imagine being able to find anything without having to waste time looking for it. Here are some ways to effectively organize your garage.
Clear out the Clutter
Get rid of those items that you don’t need anymore. Not only is it taking up space, but it’s adding to the source of your frustration. If the items are still usable, consider donating them so that someone else can get some use out of them. Make sure to dispose of any chemicals in the proper manner. Take your time when starting this task. It may take you several days just to sort through the contents of your garage. You will make better decisions if you aren’t trying to rush through the process.
Create a Space for Everything
Designate areas of your garage for items that are similar. This will make it easier to find things. Use shelves and other means of storing your items. Wall racks and above the head storage can also be utilized. This will allow you to have a more organized garage while still maintaining accessibility. Another part should be to store hazardous chemicals in such a way as to avoid pets and kids from getting into them. Cabinets that close would be one idea for how to do this safely.
Use Organizational Ideas for Your Tools
There are lots of different ways that you can organize your tools. You have the option of using peg board or even tool boxes in order to store your tools. Consider putting tools that are similar together. Another solution is to store tools that are used for the same project in the same place. One example of this is to put all of your go kart tools together so that you can easily find them. Having tools that are organized can reduce the amount of time that you spend on your projects.
Put It Back
Once you have organized your garage to your satisfaction, put the items that you are done using back in their designated places. This will eliminate the need for you to reorganize the garage in the future. It will also allow you to always find what you are looking for quickly. This may be a difficult habit to get into at first. Consider labeling where things go so that other people in your family will know where to put it.
Having an organized garage will allow you to keep it clean for longer. You can feel a sense of accomplishment once you’ve completed this task. It will make finder things easier and provide you with more space.
