{DIY Fruit Fly Traps}

08/26/14 | {DIY} crafts & other fun things

What is it with all the fruit flies at the end of August?! Ugh!

Just thinking about them buzzing around my kitchen makes my skin crawl.

And of course by the time you notice one you can have a dozen of these nasty little creatures crawling all over your fruit and buzzing near your face.

It’s hard to want to spend any time near the kitchen when they are everywhere.

I store our fruit on the table so the kids will always be able to grab a healthy snack and because we have learned fruit left in the fridge will not get eaten.

Apparently the Fruit flies like to hang out in my kitchen just as much as the kid do.

But my kitchen isn’t going to stay this way for a moment longer!

I made my own fruit fly trap and it works!

{DIY fruit fly traps!}

-3/4 cup apple cider vinegar

-A few drops of dish soap

-bowl

Fruit flies lay their eggs in rotting and fermented food so the Apple cider vinegar will attract them and the soap will disrupt the liquid so they will drown.

I am not an insect killer for the most part.

I’ve rescued a red dragonfly from drowning in the kids wading pool this summer and a bumble bee trapped in my living room.

But fruit flies?

They just got to go!

Have you tried a DIY Fruit Fly trap?
How did it go?

    I hear you! Last summer was the first time we had such a problem with fruit flies. We used two cups, one with ACV and one with orange juice. Then we wrapped cling film over the top of each cup and used a needle to poke small holes in the cling film. This allowed them to get in to the cup, but they couldn’t get back out. Not sure why we tried to different liquids … I think we were experimenting!

    Yes, I have made fruit fly traps, so to speak. I use fels naptha – if you grind it up and put it in the dirt of flowers or in a stand alone bowl, it will also kill fruit flies. I am going to try your method in the next few days!

    I tried this last summer at our old house. It worked fairly well. We have also used one of those handheld bug zapper things to get rid of them.

    I hate fruit flies!! Oh my goodness! It seems like when you start to have them it takes forever for them to go away. I have used red wine and apple cider vinegar and those both seem to work pretty well.

    They multiply so fast that you have to get after them. I’ve used this method and it definitely attracts them to their demise.
