Just last weekend I went on this massive grocery shop and as luck would have it I forgot three things.
Coffee, laundry soap and dryer sheets. Lovely, just lovely! So because no one wants to be around naked grumpy people I had to go back to the store. $50 later I finally have what I needed and I guess because I usually snag this stuff with my groceries I have never really thought much about the added cost. Has it always been this expensive to do laundry? I mean $7.00 for a pack for dryer sheets is getting a little out of hand.
My pal Rebecca who blogs over at Everyday life posted this super easy {DIY} Dryer sheet tutorial which I think will help all of us save a little extra.
Wake up before the sun has risen, stumble in the dark hitting your toe on some toy and saying words that make the cat stare at you, all in an effort to make it to the laundry room where you try to quietly throw another load of laundry in the dryer. In the process you try to remember to clean the lint trap and throw out another 10 cents worth of paper in whatever dryer sheet you are using. Sound familiar? It does to me it’s my morning routine.
I would like to say that it was during one of these morning treks that a light bulb moment occurred but who are we kidding at the crack of dawn I’m lucking if I remember my name. Truth is I found this amazing DIY dryer sheet idea while wasting time on Facebook. Yeah I know I should be more productive but in my defence I had just put laundry in and this was technically laundry related so I think we are even.
Anyways this DIY dryer sheet idea is brilliant. You see not only do you save money but you are cutting back on waste because they are reusable. Everything you need you can get at your local dollar store whatever one you shop at. I spent a total of $4.00 to do this project and it works fabulously.
Here is what you will need to make your own Dryer Sheets
- a 4-pack of plain sponges {not the ones with the green scrub on them}
- an air tight container large enough to hold your sponges and roughly 3 cups of liquid
- your favourite liquid softener (I just used the dollar brand)
- 1 C water
All you do is place the sponges in your air tight container. Add 1 cup water to 2 cups liquid softener. Cover and store. Then when you’re ready to use simply squeeze sponge of excess liquid and throw in the dryer. When clothes are dry, take sponge out of dryer and put back in container for next use.
It’s that simple and I personally love this method. I’ve been doing it for about 2 months now and love the way my clothes come out feeling soft. I also haven’t had to deal with sneaky little dryer sheets showing up in my pant leg or shirt at wrong moments. Each container should last between 4 to 6 months before having to refill.
So tell me, do you have a DIY secret or tip?

I need to try this! What a great idea. Those things do add up!
What a cool idea to make your own dryer sheets. Also is very budget friendly.
I am not much of a DIYer, but last week I found a way to battle fruit flies! Now I have little jar with apple vinegar and soap sitting everywhere and we have a lot less of flying things
This is a genius idea! I’ve always loved the smell of Suavitel – it’s the fabric softener my grandma would always use in Mexico.
This looks so easy I just have to try it!! I love DIY projects like this!
I have never thought of making my own dryer sheets! That is such a great idea.
This will surely save me some money. With my water bill the way it is this summer I surely need to keep some money in my pocket.
I have never thought of making my own dryer sheets! That is such a neat idea.
Is there unscented fabric softener? Because is there is a think this would be a neat trick. The best laundry tip I have is to make sure your dryer door is on the right side. So many people don’t realize how easy it is to switch.
I want to try the sponge trick. Sharing with my daughter-in-law because I think she will want to try it too!
I love this idea. I gotta say when I first saw this idea I was kind of baffled, but I have heard good things!
You know, I’ve seen this idea floating around but I haven’t tried it. I think I’m going to have to give it a shot though!
I have not done DIY dryer sheets yet. I already make my own laundry soap so I am not sure why I don’t do this!
I have just started to make my own products. This is a great idea. Thanks!
I’ve seen dryer sheet tutorials and have wanted to try them. Yours seems really simple.
Cool idea for the DIY Dryer Sheets … are the sponges more expensive than purchasing Dryer Sheets? The reason I ask is because im a big DIY girl but everything is super expensive where I live I love your cool DIY Projects
Wow! That’s terrific. I never really thought about how much it costs or how much waste to creates. I admit to being in a fog when I’m doing laundry, as well. This seems really doable. Thank you for sharing the tip. I can’t DIY anything so unfortunately, I have nothing back to share.

What a great idea! I wish I had my old tumbledryer now. I wonder if this would work for line drying in a way?
This is a cool idea. I don’t usually use dryer sheets because they break my daughter out but this way I can control what is in them by using a homemade softener.
I love this. I like when I can be in control of making my own household products like this.
thank you Heather for this great opportunity to be a star. I have to say I’m not a huge DIY girl but I did think this was an awesome thing and I have saved money by doing it.
