DIY: 3 layer ombré cake

11/09/13 | {DIY} crafts & other fun things, Eat

You know that feeling you get when you don’t know if something is going work out or turn into another Pinterest fail
I was like that all afternoon!

My sweet little girl Turns 3today.
Many of you will remember that normally I try and create a special cake to celebrate their special day.

This year is a little different as the birthday girl picked out her very own birthday cake.

We were perusing Pinterest and I stumbled on this beautiful cake.

The birthday girl loved it so I decides to brush off the Pinterest fail from the summer and try again.

Small problem, the pinner didn’t post how to make this beautiful ombré cake!

Want to know how I made our own ombré cake?

I prefer homemade cakes but for the sake of time I used (2) boxes of white cake mix.
For the record One box will yield you approximately 4 1/2 cups of batter.
You will need 3 cake pans as well.

I used my “whisk kicker” to make blending easier and I Stated with the lightest shade.
Once it was the perfect colour I pulled out 3 cups of batter and filled our first cake pan.
I added more food colouring to darkened it and when it was perfect we removed 3 more cups of batter and filled the second pan.
Darken the batter one last time and fill your third pan.
Make sure to measure because I ended up with enough leftover batter to make 6 cupcakes too.

Here she is patiently Waiting for her “happy happy” cakes to come out of the oven.

After letting them cool for an hour I added a Crumb coat in between each of the three layers.

I would have left it white but the birthday girl decided to Decorate with an entire jar of sprinkles.

She wanted a “doc mcstuffins” cake so we accented the cake with some cute little figurines of chilly, lambie and stuffy”

Those first few moments were nerve wracking especially with a house full of family and friends!

I’m happy to say that not only did it work out and but I also did a happy dance in my kitchen!

See for yourself….

Not too shabby for a former member of the Pinterest fail club!
The cake was super moist and really delicious.
The Colours aren’t as vibrant in picture but I’m extremely pleased with the results.
Now to sleep off this icing hangover…
Thankfully there is only one slice of cake left and it has the birthday girls name written all over it!
